My intention in setting up this blog is to monitor and review every recording I listen to and give my arrogant, black hearted opinion on every one. The whole world of Classical Guitar has become obsessed with technique and especially with playing fast, fast, fast. Most of these guys can play brilliantly if they want to. I will buy the same artist again and again in the hope of hearing something good. I am always ready to give everybody a chance. Sometimes I buy as many as 6 or 7 CDs a week solely of classical guitar music. How it got started is hard to say but it is very clear what it is about: music vs technique, Julian Bream vs John Williams, natural recording techniques vs multi-tracking, varied&dynamic sound vs the speed of sound. Whether or not we like it we have reached a point of no return and everyone who really gives a damn, playing or listening will have to pitch camp on one side or another. News for every obsessional classical guitar afficionado: there is a war in the world of classical guitar. It seems available for purchase (these are the two links i picked up on): But he can drink a guinness without embarrassing himself.īungarten himself gives an excellent interview to Colin Cooper which touches on the Caprichos: But he is a nice fellow - very earnest and serious. I met Bungarten in Dublin a few years later but I didn't mention it, as it seemed kind of a personal subject in a funny kind of way. That is not to say the music is not viable - but it is barely viable.and beyond it's barely viable technical nature it is interesting and beautiful at times but there are vastly simpler works that probably rise far above it. I Caprichos sono una serie di ottanta incisioni eseguite ad acquaforte e acquatinta con episodici interventi a bulino o puntasecca dal pittore spagnolo Francisco Goya durante gli anni novanta del XVIII secolo. While the playing communicated the music very successfully I began to feel that the player might have invested more energy, thought and love than the underlying music deserved. By the 10th listening all I could think was that the guitarist who played it must have been a jibbering wreck by the time he finished working on the recording - which was a bit distracting.īut that last thought highlighted something very significant about the record. It was perhaps the 4th or 5th time that I listened to the work that I felt just how excellent, moving and beautiful it was.

It took me a long time to realise just how difficult this work must have been. It was a very expensive Double CD and I had never heard of the player before, or the music - so, naturally, I had to buy it. I found this record during a very enjoyable trawl through the Instrumental rack of a Berlin Record Shop. In this Capricho a tone row is stated in its base form, then in retrograde inversion, but after this by-the-numbers serialism, the music wanders away into the realms of tonality. For my first review I am going back in time a little to 2000, to review one of the most important and musically excellent recordings I have bought in some time. Zoran Dukic is in my opinion one of the best classical guitarists in the world at the moment, his playing on this album is impeccable and inspiring.

I should mention that listening to 2 full CD’s at one stretch can be a bit overwhelming and maybe a bit boring because not all of Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s composition invoke the same amount of inspiration, but there is a lot of excellent music here, and the coupling of music with art that is biting satire on Spanish society, politics, religion, corruption and fighting is particularly interesting.
